🎯 Why Your “First Ski Lesson” Matters
Your first-ever ski experience will likely determine how you feel about the sport long-term:
- ❌ Bad experience = trauma → you’ll avoid skiing in the future
- ✅ Good experience = fun → you’ll want to learn and improve
Choosing the right instructor is absolutely critical.
✅ Qualities a Good Instructor Should Have
1️⃣ Safety First & Strong Responsibility
Skiing is a high-risk sport. Especially when you’re abroad — language barriers, unfamiliar medical systems — an injury can quickly turn into a nightmare.
- Always stop on the side of the slope, never in the middle
- Before starting, check uphill to avoid collisions
- If someone is injured, wait for trained rescue staff — don’t move them carelessly
(I personally suffered a knee fracture on the slopes — I know how important safety is.)
2️⃣ Patience Is a Must
- Kids often can’t express fear clearly, and adults panic easily on the first day
- A good coach stays calm and explains clearly, no matter the student’s pace
- Allowing parents to accompany shy children is perfectly okay — instructors should respect that
3️⃣ Certified & Transparent Qualifications
- Coaches should hold official certifications like KSIA or ISIA
- They must be registered with the resort and wear a visible instructor badge
- Unregistered instructors (“black coaches”) often get removed by resort security — it ruins the lesson and wastes time
❗ Red Flags: How to Spot an Unqualified Instructor
- ❌ No real teaching videos — fun travel clips ≠ proof of teaching ability
- ❌ No valid instructor certificate — safety can’t be guaranteed
- ❌ Fake experience — “8 years of skiing” might mean once-a-year vacation trips
- ❌ Not registered at the resort — no badge = high risk of being kicked off the slope
